Greenhouse gas emissions statistics from the live EDGAR extract

Key findings on concentration, absolute versus per-capita ordinals, sector methane share, and the empty LULUCF fact table. Registry counts only, not climate policy advice.

According to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, EDGAR v8.0 publishes 2023 country estimates within a global annual greenhouse-gas total of roughly 50,000 MtCO₂e; this August 2026 statistics surface documents the source scope and exclusions in our methodology.

  • 51 major economies sit in this EDGAR extract (58,527 rows, 1970–2023). It is not a 200-country world census; every share below is of this 51-economy register.
  • 47,111 Mt CO₂e in 2023 across the extract (AR6 GWP100, LULUCF excluded). China alone is 15,970 Mt (33.9%); the top three sum to 26,082 Mt (55.4%). Denmark is the absolute floor at 41.9 Mt.
  • #1/#13 is China's absolute vs per-capita ordinal (15,970 Mt, 11.3 tCO₂e/person). United Arab Emirates leads per person at 27 t (#1 pc / #33 abs). India is #3 absolute but #45 per person (2.9 t); Bangladesh is the per-person floor at 1.6 t.
  • 15,801 Mt in Energy leads the 7 live sectors. Waste is only 1,697 Mt but 92.4% methane by CO₂e, versus 0.1% in Energy, the absolute and methane-share ladders are not interchangeable.
  • 75.4% of the 2023 extract CO₂e is carbon dioxide (35,500 Mt). Methane is 17%, N₂O 4.4%, and F-gases 3.3% on the same AR6 GWP100 scale.
  • 0 LULUCF fact rows sit in this database even though the sectors taxonomy lists 8 codes (7 with live EDGAR rows). Country and sector totals here exclude land use; do not invent LULUCF country figures from this extract.
  • 7.88× is China's 1970→2023 absolute growth (2,026 → 15,970 Mt). The United States moved 5,702 → 5,969 Mt (1.05×) over the same window, nearly flat while China multiplied.
  • 45.5% of extract Mt sits in East Asia & Pacific (12 of 51 economies, 21,452 Mt). Region shares inherit the 51-economy sample, not a complete regional census.
