According to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, EDGAR v8.0 publishes 2023 country estimates within a global annual greenhouse-gas total of roughly 50,000 MtCO₂e; this August 2026 sector index documents the source scope and exclusions in our methodology. Seven sectors have live EU EDGAR country rows; LULUCF is taxonomy-only here because EDGAR's main GHG dataset excludes land use. The index describes the source taxonomy and does not assess or recommend policy choices.
-
Energy
Global share: ~45%
Power generation, fossil-fuel extraction, refining, the largest single sector globally.
-
Transport
Global share: ~15%
Road, rail, aviation, shipping, and fuel combustion associated with mobility.
-
Buildings
Global share: ~10%
Residential and commercial heating, cooling, and appliance use.
-
Industry
Global share: ~14%
Manufacturing, cement, steel, and chemicals, including energy and process emissions.
-
Agriculture
Global share: ~11%
Livestock, rice cultivation, fertilizer application, and manure management.
-
Land use & forestry (LULUCF)
Global share: variable · no live EDGAR country rows
Forest growth and loss plus soil carbon; EDGAR's main GHG dataset excludes LULUCF, so this site has no country ranking for it.
-
Waste
Global share: ~3%
Landfill methane, wastewater treatment, and waste incineration.
-
Fugitive emissions
Global share: ~3%
Methane leaks from oil and gas systems and coal mining.

According to the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, the EDGAR v8.0 dataset publishes country- and sector-level greenhouse-gas inventories on a common bottom-up model. Every figure on PlainEmissions is rebuilt from that release; no number is typed in by an editor. Sector rails follow the IPCC-aligned EDGAR taxonomy; LULUCF is taxonomy-only because EDGAR main GHG excludes land use. See our editorial standards & corrections policy, the methodology behind these numbers, or report a data error. Data current as of EDGAR sector taxonomy. EDGAR figures are production-based inventory totals for a published reference year (AR6 GWP100, LULUCF excluded on ranked surfaces) - not climate policy advice, real-time emissions, or a substitute for UNFCCC legal inventories.
